You Can’t Outrun Your Environment

“The environment always wins. Choose wisely.” – Craig Zuber

You can’t stop the environment from changing you. But you can choose which environment you let change you.

Some environments fuel you. Others drain you. And no matter how strong or self-disciplined you think you are, the environment you’re in will shape you. It always does.

When I joined the Marine Corps, I thought I knew what discipline was. I didn’t.

At boot camp, you get dropped into an ecosystem built for transformation. It’s chaos by design. Five people screaming in your face. Impossible standards. Exhaustion that breaks you open. You can resist it, question it, even laugh at it, but you can’t escape it. The environment changes you.

That was my first lesson. You don’t grow because you want to. You grow because the environment requires it.

I saw that truth again years later through my daughter, Aspen. She’s the same person she was a year ago, same DNA, same drive, but she’s thriving today because she changed her environment. Last year she was miserable in a setting that didn’t fit. This year she’s surrounded by people who challenge, support, and bring out her best. Same human. Different environment. Completely different outcome.

The Marine Corps taught me that discipline, excellence, and adaptability aren’t personality traits. They’re environmental results. If you’re surrounded by people who demand precision, you rise to it. If you’re surrounded by comfort, you shrink to it.

Teams aren’t built in comfort. They’re built in shared adversity. Excellence isn’t a mindset. It’s a habit formed through repetition, precision, and pride in the smallest details. Adaptability matters because life is uncertain, and rigidity breaks where flexibility bends.

Drive alone isn’t enough. Even the most motivated person can’t outwork a toxic environment. At some point, it breaks you or dulls you. But in the right environment, one that demands growth, celebrates effort, and rejects excuses, change becomes automatic.

Take inventory of your surroundings. Who and what fills your days? Are you getting fuel or friction?

If you know it’s time to upgrade your environment, start with your coaching. The right coach helps you see blind spots, rebuild habits, and align your life with who you’re becoming.
