I was looking through my Marine Corps Recruiting Manual from 16 years ago and found this:

B. MILITARY BEARING: Properly wear and maintain uniforms, demonstrate presence and personal awareness, and practice personal hygiene.

C. ESPRIT DE CORPS: Acquire the common spirit of the Marine Corps that inspires enthusiasm, devotion, pride, initiative, teamwork, aggressiveness, determination, moral integrity, camaraderie, and the burning desire to work with and for others toward excellence in common goals.

D. INDIVIDUAL GENERAL MILITARY SUBJECTS (IGMS): Demonstrate understanding and/or proficiency in IGMS. (i.e., Marine Corps History, Drill, Troop Information, etc.

7/8 Go Time! Event

June 8, 2009

Local Marine veteran says it’s “Go Time” for military personnel wanting to become business owners.

On Wednesday, July 8, 2009, local entrepreneur Craig Zuber will be conducting a workshop on how to apply military experience to business ownership.  Called “Go Time!”, the event  will provide practical tips and tools on how to use military experience as a springboard to business ownership.

The idea for the Go Time! workshop came from a question that Craig frequently asks himself and others: “What would you do differently in business if you knew your life depends on it?”   This question became the basis for Craig’s transition from Marine to successful business ownership.

Although an entrepreneur from an early age (his first business was selling candy at his elementary school), it was his experience in the Marines that made Craig realize how complimentary the two pursuits are.  “It is no coincidence that both business ownership and the military require focus, discipline, and team work,” says Zuber. Now a successful Realtor in Boise, Idaho, Craig has long wanted to teach current military personnel what he learned the hard way.  “I made a lot of mistakes in business. Thankfully, my military training help me keep my bearings” says Zuber.  “Go Time! gives people a chance to learn from my experiences”.

Craig will be discussing the many parallels between the military and business ownership:  reconnaissance, planning, clear communication, adapting to ground conditions, creating systems and much more.  “Everything the military teaches you can be applied to business” says Zuber.

The workshop is geared towards active duty and military vets, but there are many lessons that business owners with no military experience can learn from the workshop.  “I want everyone who does business with a sense of urgency to attend” says Zuber.  In addition to the information shared, Zuber wants to expose the military audience to successful local business owners.  “We can all learn from each other”, says Zuber.

The Business Battlefield

June 3, 2009

What forces are stopping entrepreneurs in their tracks?

The problem is certainly not any lack of desire, drive, or willingness to work long hours. At least half of small business owners put in more than 60 hours per week, according to the Microsoft.com Small Business Center. Nor are America’s budding entrepreneurs short on ingenuity or out-of-the-box ideas; the US Patent and Trademark Office issued 157,774 new patents in 2008.

Despite the grim statistics and risks involved, the entrepreneurial dream just won’t die. In the wake of massive layoffs, the US has seeing a huge leap in the number of startups since 2007, as the newly unemployed who can’t find a job turn to self-employment.

The problem is not that small business owners don’t have the passion or the drive to make it—they just don’t know how to harness their g-forces into consistent, coordinated, predictable performance that hits the target with precision, time after time. They need real-world tactics for running a business operation—the what, how, and when that will save their bacon.

Entrepreneurs need to apply the life-or-death urgency and precision of a military campaign to the execution of business operations!

Craig and his team have helped my family get closer to our financial goals. We have been able to make some great purchases and when I have made mistakes Craig has helped me get out of them. I appreciate the way he has educated himself in his profession, and he is always happy to share his knowledge with his clients.

I met Craig 5 years ago in the middle of the real estate bubble, Craig and his team quickly help me to aggressively prosper. Craig never sugarcoats the opportunity; you get the pro’s and con’s of the investment up front. His honest and forth right nature has kept me out of deals that would have been good for him but ultimately bad for me. I have worked with others on his team and I appreciate that he has instilled this quality in them.

Real estate is tough right now; Craig has been there to help me make whatever adjustments needed to my portfolio. Good friends are there for you in good times and bad. I am happy to call Craig a good friend.
